Cranial reconstruction

Large and complex defects of the skull, closed with an implant shaped from the patient's own CT data. Titanium or PEEK, designed together with the neurosurgical team before anything is manufactured.

  • A titanium cranial plate fitted to a printed skull model
  • A surgeon pointing at printed CT reconstructions of a skull
  • A patient lying on the operating table before surgery

The cases a catalogue implant cannot close

If the defect is large, irregular, or crosses an anatomical boundary, a stock plate stops being an option. These are the situations we are usually contacted about.

  • Hands holding a printed cranial model with a perforated implant
  • A surgical team at work under theatre lights
  • Surgical instruments laid out on a sterile drape
  • A smiling patient with a bandaged head after surgery
  • A doctor examining the scar on a patient's head
  • An operating theatre during a reconstruction

Selected Cases

A few of them, in short

Different year, different anatomy, different problem to solve.

  • 2024

Large fronto-parietal defect closed with a single titanium plate

Designed around an existing fixation from a previous surgery, so nothing had to be removed in theatre.

  • 2023

    PEEK implant after tumour resection

Chosen over titanium at the neurosurgeon's request, for post-operative imaging.

  • 2021

Revision of a failed stock cranioplasty

The original implant had loosened. The replacement was shaped to the bone as it had healed, not as it was.

  • 2019

    Fronto-orbital reconstruction

Crossed two anatomical regions, planned on a printed model with the surgical team before manufacturing.
